Caza d’Oro – Mas d’Azil
Caza d’Oro: an untypical artists’ residence in Mas-d’Azil
Caza d’Oro is a somewhat untypical centre for residence and international creation, situated in a private house in the heart of the village of Mas-d’Azil in the département of Ariège. Its primary vocation is to offer visual artists the conditions and means to work with a view to developing a distinctive project linked to their surroundings. Since it opened in 2003 Caza d’Oro has been providing a place set apart where residents can settle down in a specific temporality, space and sociability. The residence period (from one to three months) often marks a high point in the life of the invited artists, a phase for recharging batteries or going back to the roots, away from the rigidly demarcated contemporary art circuits and the hubbub of the big cities. A different dynamic is created through Mas-d’Azil – a dynamic anchored in a natural rural territory that has largely been preserved and is renowned for its quality of life.
The Caza d’Oro project represents an original and innovative tool for the public in Ariège and
beyond: a tool for discovering and raising awareness about contemporary art via exhibitions and publications devoted to the resident artists, as well as numerous educational activities.
The spirit of Caza d’Oro is therefore resolutely exploratory and inventive. The residence was conceived above all as a laboratory, a place for experimentation, and it seeks to offer a veritable platform of possibilities geared to fusing the notions of research and creation.
